Before registering for VAT, businesses are first required to register with the Zambia Revenue Authority for a taxpayer identification number (known in Zambia as a 'TPIN'). The TPIN is a unique, ten-digit, computer-generated number allocated to a taxpayer upon registration and is a prerequisite for carrying out transactions in Zambia, opening a bank account, transferring property, registering for VAT, etc.

Businesses are required by law to register for VAT in Zambia if they deal in taxable goods and services and their taxable turnover exceeds the statutory registration threshold
