Since 1 January 2021, applications for residence permits from British citizens are processed in accordance with the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and Integration (FNIA) and no longer in accordance with the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (FMPA) in force in the EU and EFTA. The UK-Swiss CRA does not apply anymore to new applications after 2021, and UK nationals are therefore subject to the same rules that apply to third-country nationals, including quotas.

The Federal Court sets quotas for residence permits and short-stay permits. The court releases quotas every three months and the cantons manage them. For 2024, 4,500 residence permits (B) and 4,000 short-stay permits (L) for third-country nationals are available.
